The specification itself is 308 pages without providing any formal semantics.Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) specification provides a graphical notation for expressing business processes in a Business Process Diagram (BPD). 1 shows only a subset of all possible notations. The event-based XOR gateway selects one output arc based on the occurrence of the corresponding event. The parallel fork gateway passes control to all output arcs. The data-based XOR gateway split passes control to exactly one of its output arcs. On the left hand side, four types of events are shown. These symbols can be combined to construct a BPD.
Artifacts are used to add data or to further annotate process models.įigure 1 shows the basic set of symbols used by BPMN. Swimlanes are just a means to structure processes. The flow objects can be connected to establish a control-flow.
Gateways are used to model splits and joins. Atomic activities are referred to as tasks. Events are comparable to places in a Petri net, i.e., they are used to trigger and/or connect activities. There are three types of flow objects: Events, Activities, and Gateways. Flow objects are the main graphical elements to define the behavior of a process.
There are four basic categories of elements: (i) Flow Objects, (ii) Connecting Objects, (iii) Swimlanes, and (iv) Artifacts. A BPD is essentially a flowchart composed of different elements. The intent of BPMN is to standardize a business process modeling notation in the face of many different modeling notations and viewpoints.Ī model expressed in terms of BPMN is called a Business Process Diagram (BPD). It is now being maintained by the Object Management Group (OMG) who released a “Final Adopted Specification” in 2006. BPMN was initially developed by Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI).
